The Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invites applications for a full-time tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Anthropology of Health. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

 Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Anthropology, with a specialization in Biological Anthropology by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Candidates must have a track record in the field of Anthropology of Health, with demonstrated experience working with rural/remote northern and/or Indigenous North American populations, and with children and youth. We seek a scholar whose research engages with health inequities and their socio-environmental context in human populations, past or present, using theory and methods from biological anthropology and a biocultural approach. The successful applicant’s work must engage with the role of bioanthropological research within contemporary society through translational and/or applied research, as evidenced by strong research networks; a proven track record of community-engaged, participatory scholarship; and successful collaboration with health-focused organizations.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and strengthen existing faculty strengths in the UTM Department of Anthropology and in the tri-campus University of Toronto Anthropology Graduate Program. The successful applicant will be expected to develop and maintain an active, outstanding, innovative, independent, and externally funded program of research, to pursue excellence in teaching in the UTM Anthropology undergraduate program (http://www.utm.utoronto.ca/anthropology/), and to participate actively in the tri-campus University of Toronto Anthropology Graduate Program (http://www.anthropology.utoronto.ca/graduate/).

Excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant academic journals meeting high international standards as appropriate for stage of career, equivalent peer-reviewed venues, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant disciplinary conferences; grants or awards as appropriate for stage of career; and strong endorsements by referees of international stature.

Evidence for excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments; strong letters of reference; and the teaching dossier including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations submitted as part of the application. 

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the UTM Department of Anthropology’s innovative Anthropology of Health undergraduate focus, and there will be opportunities to participate in other UTM initiatives, such as the new Mamow [Together] Centre for Northern Community Well-Being, UTM’s new Centre for Child Development, Mental Health & Policy; and UTM’s partnerships with regional Public Health providers.   

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
