PURPOSE: The Department of Anthropology at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks an academic year adjunct lecturer (non-tenure track) in biological anthropology for a one-year term beginning in Fall 2021. The selected candidate will be required to teach the equivalent of six courses during the academic year with at least one course in each quarter, fall, winter and spring. Each quarter is 10 weeks long, with an eleventh week set for final examinations. Courses may include Introduction to Biological Anthropology, Biological Anthropology in Popular Culture, Paleoanthropology, Evolutionary Medicine, or specific assignments may be made according to the academic qualifications of the individual and programmatic need.

SALARY: $52,800-56,040 depending on teaching experience; benefits eligible.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Ph.D. in Anthropology (emphasis: Biological Anthropology) by the time of appointment. (2) Demonstrated excellence in teaching biological anthropology at the college level. (3) Demonstrated expertise in the specific topics covered in the courses. (4) Excellent communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Faculty responsibilities include teaching (95%) and service (5%), as specified by the Santa Clara University Faculty Handbook (sec. 3.6). Duties include but are not limited to: 1. Planning and teaching lectures selected from ANTH 1: Introduction to Biological Anthropology with lab, ANTH 5: Biological Anthropology and Popular Culture, ANTH 132: Paleoanthropology, and ANTH 137: Evolutionary Medicine. 2. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with assigned courses, including: a. Teach courses as assigned. Teaching a course typically includes developing the syllabus, assignments, readings, and course schedule before the course begins; developing appropriate teaching preparations for each class meeting; selecting course materials and ordering books; assigning and evaluating written work that aligns the course description and with course learning outcomes; conducting and appearing on-time for all scheduled class meetings; submitting course grades by quarterly deadlines; and administering all required course evaluations (numerical and narratives). b. Use appropriate measures of student performance, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work. c. Submitting student grades to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline. d. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses; e. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or the Chair of the Department. f. Participating in student recruitment and retention activities as deemed appropriate by the department chair or department culture; participating in professional organizations and activities; and performing community service in virtue of their professional expertise and association with the University “ Faculty Handbook, 3.6.3.1, Ch. 1, Protocols, p.24

START DATE: September 1, 2021, Faculty members are expected to be available during the week of September 13-17, 2021 for orientation programs and faculty meetings. Classes begin September 20, 2021.
