As a national leader among independent research institutes working exclusively on infectious diseases, Texas Biomedical Research Institute is discovering and sharing critical breakthroughs needed by scientists to help protect you, your families and the global community from the threats of infectious diseases. Since its founding in 1941 by Thomas B. Slick Jr., the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) has gained worldwide recognition in scientific and academic communities for the quality of its basic research.

Texas Biomed partners with hundreds of researchers and institutions around the world, targeting advances in the fight against infectious diseases impacting our communities around the world, including AIDS, TB, hepatitis, malaria, hemorrhagic fever viruses, parasitic infections and many other infectious diseases. We also study co-morbidities of infection and vulnerable populations, such as the very young and the elderly and those suffering from cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders.

Its staff of more than 350 employees includes a multidisciplinary team of approximately 75+ doctoral-level scientists who lead more than 200 major research projects in the Institute’s three program areas of Disease Intervention & Prevention, Host Pathogen Interaction and Population Health, as well as the Southwest National Primate Research Center. Our scientists work each and every day to improve human health by being a world leader in lifestyle and infectious disease research. Each year, our scientists are engaged in more than 200 research projects and publish well over 100 articles in the international scientific literature

Texas Biomed is located on a 200-acre campus on the northwest side of San Antonio, Texas, a diverse and growing city in central Texas, with excellent quality of life and affordable housing.

Job Title - Staff Scientist/Postdoctoral Scientist

Texas Biomed is searching for an exceptional staff scientist or postdoctoral scientist to work on understanding the consequences of genetic variation in pedigreed primate populations. The position will be in the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC) Colony Administration and Genomics Component, which functions to support and advise the SNPRC on its non-human Primate (NHP) genomics resource and research activities. Over the last 50 years the SNPRC has developed several large, pedigreed, nonhuman primate colonies (baboons, rhesus macaque, and marmoset). Animals in these pedigrees have been extensively characterized at the genetic and phenotypic level. A goal of the component is to support genetic characterization of the NHP colonies and develop breeding strategies to maintain genetic diversity. The successful applicant will have immediate opportunities to work closely with an active team of investigators to perform population and statistical genetic analyses, publish results, interact with NPRC working groups and contribute data and results to the field of NHP genomics.

Requirements for this position are: Doctoral degree. Experience with next generation sequencing data (genomic, transcriptomic or epigenetic) and statistical or population genetic analysis is essential. Candidates with a strong bioinformatics background and knowledge of scientific programming languages (for example, R, python, C++) are strongly encouraged to apply.

This is a full time salaried (exempt) position. Texas Biomed business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flexibility with hours is required; able to work occasional nights and weekends. Texas Biomed is committed to a drug-free workplace. Pre-employment drug screen is required.

Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and long-term disability insurances. Educational assistance program, paid holidays, vacation, sick/emergency leave, retirement plan.
