The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Metropolitan State University of Denver invites candidates to apply for a full-time, tenure-track biological anthropologist to serve as Director of MSU Denver's Human Identification Lab (HIL ). Duties for this position will be divided as 50% HIL Director and 50% Assistant Professor. We invite candidates that specialize in forensic anthropology with preferred additional expertise in bioarchaeology and/or paleopathology. This position is a 12-month appointment that begins August 2020.
The successful candidate will be expected to oversee the day-to-day operations of the HIL , including coordinating forensic anthropology casework, and teach courses in introductory biological anthropology, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, and paleopathology. The successful candidate will also have experience or demonstrated interest in cultivating community partnerships to provide students with applied education opportunities and connect those opportunities to curriculum in innovative and meaningful ways.
The MSU Denver Anthropology Program has faculty members with research interests in all four anthropology subfields. The program is part of a Sociology and Anthropology Department that also has sociology faculty, an administrative assistant, a lab coordinator, and a professional advisor serving a growing program.

Human Identification Lab (HIL ) Director duties: • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the HIL . • Mentor students in forensic anthropology case work. • Continue the ongoing development and expansion of the HIL , including fostering relationships with local medical examiner and coroner’s offices.
Assistant Professor Responsibilities: • Teach a 2/2 load. This includes preparing for courses, assessing student progress, conducting curricular review, and integrating technology, as appropriate. • Advise students. This involves assisting students in choosing career options, choosing a degree program, successfully completing his or her degree, obtaining employment or graduate school placement, and staying informed of University and College policies. • Pursue a program of scholarly activities that contributes to teaching and intellectual work that is peer reviewed and publicly disseminated. • Engage in service to the department, college, profession, and/or community.
• PhD in Anthropology with a specialization in forensic anthropology (or closely related field). ABD candidates will be considered, but PhD must be conferred no later than July 1, 2020 • Demonstrated experience in forensic anthropology case work • Ability to involve undergraduate students in forensic anthropology field and/or lab projects
• Experience directing and/or supervising forensic anthropology casework • College teaching experience • Ability to teach and/or develop online courses • Expertise in experiential learning (e.g., internships, service learning) • Experience with non-traditional students and diverse urban groups and an ability to teach from a perspective that includes U.S. ethnic minorities, other marginalized groups, and/or women • Demonstrated interest in working with diverse students in programs of recruitment and retention
