Brown University invites applications for a 2-year International Postdoctoral Fellowship in Anthropology, focused on social bioarchaeological approaches to the human past. The successful candidate will be someone well trained in bioarchaeological methods (biological anthropology and archaeology), whose work advances understanding of social experience in the past, and who can contribute to a community of interdisciplinary humanities scholars. The Department is especially interested in candidates whose work both engages critical theories of the body and aligns with the topics of health, illness, and/or impairment in the past, although other relevant research areas will also be considered. Geographic area is open, and an active research program is essential. Demonstrable teaching ability is vital. The successful candidate will teach two courses per year in the Department of Anthropology, to be cross-listed in the Cogut Institute for the Humanities course offerings. Topically, the candidate will teach courses on human osteology and bioarchaeology, as well as courses that reflect a broader engagement with social and biological dimensions of the body in the past.

The position is to be held jointly at the Department of Anthropology and the Cogut Institute for the Humanities, where the fellow will attend weekly fellows’ seminars and participate in its activities as appropriate to their research. Applicants must hold a PhD in anthropology or a closely related discipline. Only candidates whose PhD will be completed by July 1, 2019 will be eligible for consideration. This two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship is not renewable. Candidates should submit a letter of application that reflects their research and teaching interests, a curriculum vitae, and the names and addresses of three referees. Questions may be directed to Prof. Andrew Scherer, at [email protected], (401) 863-7059. Review of applications will begin February 15, 2019. The appointment will be effective July 1, 2019. The position offers a salary of $61,500 with an increase to $63,907 the second year, plus benefits and a reimbursable research budget of $2,000 per year.
