The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in St. John’s College offers a major and a minor in Anthropology to a diverse body of students as well as undergraduate and graduate M.A. level programs in Sociology and Criminology. We have fourteen full-time faculty members along with a qualified pool of instructors who teach the Anthropology, Sociology and Criminology courses. The Department’s faculty are highly devoted to students while maintaining an active research agenda and presence in the regional, national and international academic community. The Anthropology program at St. John’s has a global, critical and applied perspective. It offers one-on-one mentoring for each one of its majors, including the completion of a Senior Research Thesis in anthropology and other High Impact Practices. The program is invested in enhancing student retention and graduation rates by offering a broad range of courses that span the humanities, social and natural sciences. It is focused on teaching applicable research and analytical skills so students are ready to move smoothly and successfully between academia and the workplace. Students from the major attend top tier graduate programs and have been awarded prestigious fellowships and scholarships. There are plans to create a new Master’s Degree in Applied Anthropology, too. The program and its faculty are also active in contributing to other interdisciplinary programs such as the Ozanam Scholars, the M.A. in Global Development and Social Justice, and the University’s core curriculum. The program has been actively committed to supporting the University’s mission locally, regionally and globally.
As tenure-track Assistant Professor, the new hire will be responsible for teaching a wide-range of Anthropology courses, advise students and contribute to developing a new M.A. program, while actively doing research to build their portfolio towards tenure.
Applicants for the tenure-track Assistant Professor position should hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment (Fall 2019). We are looking for applicants within the area of Biocultural Anthropology. Geographic area is open. Preference will be given to candidates with applied fieldwork and an ability to regularly teach courses in biological anthropology. Candidates should have a promising record of scholarship and publications, and a genuine interest in both service and student mentoring.
